I’m Loving :: 3 Must-Hear Podcasts

3 Terrific Podcasts 2017-Midlife Modern Style

Podcasts vs. Books

I love reading books- the way they feel in my hands, the smell of the paper, the delightful treasures revealed with each turn of the page. My favorite books have taken me on adventures and taught me valuable lessons about myself and the human condition. But lately, I haven’t been reading novels. What happened?

I discovered terrific podcasts. I still read quite a bit, mostly work-related books about personal growth, business development, and psychology; but they don’t provide the same escape as a novel. With a quick search on iTunes, I can learn with abandon, step into the lives of strangers, and escape into rich stories. The melodic voices saturate my imagination, adding a unique sensory element. Although nothing can take the place of a good book, podcasts are a convenient and super-fun alternative.

3 Must-Hear Podcasts

1. S-Town from Serial and This American Life

favorite podcasts: S-Town Podcast

S-Town is story-telling at its best. Over the course of 6 chapters (episodes), you escape into the brilliant mind of John B. McLemore, an eccentric middle-aged horologist living in rural Alabama; the place he calls “Shit-Town.” I was mesmerized by the kooky cast of characters with their southern drawls, tattoos, and small-town lives that were anything but small. I couldn’t wait to google the characters to compare the real faces, and to those, I had imagined. S-Town is both a murder mystery and a commentary on bigotry, the human condition, and the current state (and moral decline) of our country. Journalist Brian Reed’s poignant narration and the superbly constructed story draws you in, melts your heart, and challenges you to question your worldview. If you haven’t listened to it yet, you need to do so ASAP!

2. Call Your Girlfriend by Ann Friedman and Aminatou Sow

favorite podcasts: Call Your Girlfriend Podcast

Call Your Girlfriend’s tagline is “a podcast for long-distance besties everywhere.” And that’s how I feel every Friday- like I’m listening to my best friends riff on everything from Trump (“Cheeto-Watch”) to feminism, shopping to celebrities, and even the perils of your annual visit to the gynecologist. The hosts, Ann Friedman and Aminatou Sow, are hilarious and relatable. And for a middle-aged mom like me, without kids at home to do the job, CYG keeps me up-to-date on the zeitgeist of our millennial culture.

3. WTF with Marc Maron

favorite podcasts: WTF with Marc Maron

I love Marc Maron’s WTF podcast. He starts with a WTF commentary on current events (or whatever is on his mind) and moves on to the guest interview. Through thoughtful questions, he gets his guests to open up and share their story in a way allows that listener to see the “real person” beneath the celebrity. Marc’s authentic, sometimes angry, always hilarious style makes me feel like he’s my friend too. Like we’re all in this together.
